Intravenous Sedation

Are you afraid of the pain from dental procedures or does the mere thought of walking into a dental office makes you tense? You are not alone. Many people struggle with fear of the dental chair – and would rather live with pain, than suffer through a treatment.

At ConfiDental Costa Rica, we offer our patients the option of Intravenous Sedation or Conscious Sedation for their dental treatment. Intravenous Anesthesia is usually safe and is used for short, uncomplicated dental procedures and allows you to stay awake and relaxed during the treatment. It can be used for everything from oral surgery to teeth cleaning.

This procedure involves a combination of a sedative to relax you and an anesthetic to block pain. A doctor or nurse (no anesthesiologist is needed) will administer the medicine through an IV or a shot into a muscle. This can also be given as medicine to take orally.

If you take the medicine orally, you will start to feel the effects after 30-60 minutes. However, with the IV or shot, the effects are almost immediate. You will begin to feel relaxed and drowsy. Your breathing will slow and your blood pressure may drop slightly. The dentist will provide a monitor during your oral surgery and a person will be with you at all times during the procedure to make sure you are doing well throughout the treatment.

BEFORE THE PROCEDURE:

We take extreme care to review our patient’s medical records. However, we need you to follow the pre-procedure directions we give you.

Please tell us:

  • If you are or could be pregnant

  • What medicines you are taking, even drugs, supplements, or herbs you bought without a prescription

  • About allergies or health conditions you have, what medicines you are taking, and what anesthesia or sedation you have had before.

ON THE DAY OF YOUR PROCEDURE:

Follow instructions about when to stop eating and drinking.

  • DO NOT drink alcohol the night before and the day of your procedure.

  • Take the drugs as prescribed by Confidential Costa Rica doctors.

  • Arrive at the hospital or clinic on time.
